Two children hit by truck, critically injured

Two Northeast Philadelphia children were critically injured when a pickup truck struck them as they walked home from school on Sept. 10.

The siblings, a 10-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy, were attempting to cross busy Academy Road at Byberry Road at 3:12 p.m. on Sept. 10 when a 2003 Dodge Ram driven by a 20-year-old woman struck them. The truck had been traveling eastbound on Byberry and was turning left onto Academy. Both the vehicle and the children had green lights, police said.

The motorist remained at the scene as witnesses called 911. Police found both children lying in the street and suffering from head trauma. They were rushed to Aria Health-Torresdale in critical condition. Both were later transferred to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

Police did not release the victims’ names. Both are enrolled at Stephen Decatur School in Parkwood, according to published reports. Updates to their conditions were not available early this week. Police typically don’t provide medical updates unless a person passes away.

A police commander at the scene said that the motorist did not appear impaired and that witnesses did not indicate that she was driving recklessly. No criminal charges have been filed. ••
